  1. I selected Treasure Island because this book gives children the opportunity to explore the adventures of living on an island. Children are able to use their imagination to explore the sea and view different regions of the world. Reading this book can make one feel like you are really there in those times.

  2. I have never read this book or heard of it. I might need to read that. What age group is it best for, I teach high school and they may need to read it as well.

  7. QUOTES OF LYNDON B. JOHNSON, JANET GONZALES- MENA, MA, AND JOHN HAGEL

    Lyndon B. Johnson:
"We must throw open the doors of opportunity. But we also must equip our people to walk through these doors."

"We have talked long enough in this country about equal rights. We have talked for one hundred years or more. It is time now to write it in the books of law.

    Janet Gonzales-Mena, MA:
“It is important to remember that it is not human differences that undermine children’s development but rather unfair, hurtful treatment based upon those differences.”

John Hagel:” In the context of Pursuing Passion. Hagel states that there are two kinds of passion – the passion of the true believer and the passion of the explorer.”

  9. NAEYC and DEC Codes of Ethics

The three ideas I selected for NAEYC are to appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage, appreciate and support the bond between the child and family, and to respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual child, family member, and colleague. These three core values of NAEYC represent my significance as a professional in daycare licensing. We believe that the connection of the early childhood development of children should start during the early years. My job is to ensure that our children in the centers/ home are being cared for by nurturing care takers or parents, allowing each child the opportunity to grow individually in their own space with opportunities to explore their surroundings, building a community of diversity connecting a support system for all, and respecting the right to grow at you own pace.

The three codes of ethics I selected for DEC are “ We shall demonstrate our respect and concerns for children, family, colleagues, and others with whom we work, honor their beliefs, values, customs, languages, and culture. We shall recognize our responsibility to improve the developmental outcome of children and to provide service and support to provide services in a fair and equitable manner to all families and children, and we should recognize and respect the dignity, diversity, and autonomy of the family and children we serve.

As a profession in the licensing division; fairness is our number one resource when working with children. To work in my profession; you must have good communication skills, be able to work with people from diverse back grounds groups, respecting their languages, honoring their values and their cultures. We do not discriminate with the clients we serve my profession. Our primary goal is to serve the people we work with in a positive way. You must be committed to the cause of serving the community.

  10. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support during the past 8 weeks. These past 8 weeks have been very rewarding for me. This class has been a struggle for me; but the closure has saddened my heart. I feel very connected to all of you and I know that many of you will go on to higher grounds. I'm looking forward to reading books of my colleague in the future; and will proudly say “wow, this is my former class mate”. I wish all of you success in your careers.

  11. My Connections to Play

    Quotes:

    Anonymous
"Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate."
.Barbara Bush, former U.S. first lady
"You have to love your children unselfishly. That is hard. But it is the only way."

I was supported by all my family members. I am the 11th child of 12 children. Playing with my family was a community within its own. There were so many thing to do because my older sibling was very protect of my younger brother and I. There were many activities. We play games like Black Bird / Blue Bird, Hide and seek Red light / Blue Light, Little Sally Walton, and catching lighting bugs.
Today’s play is much different, the children today depends on high technology for activates. The play during my year was more physical and well balanced for the body.
My role of paly has not changed for me. I run 3 miles daily. I’m engaged in staying active with my son. We play basketball, swim, and runs daily.

  12. My Support

My family support comes from my son, father, and my little brother. My father and my brother talk on the telephone daily to me. They are there whenever I need them. I remember last year I got sick at work and passed out. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. My father and brother were there to assist me. My brother made sure that I was comfortable in the hospital, without any worries. He stayed the entire 2 weeks with me. He only went home to change his clothing and returned shortly afterward. My father stayed at my home with my son. He made sure that my son completed his homework, got up for school, and cooked for him. I’m really blessed to have my father and my little brother for my support.

My technical support comes from my alarm clock, cell phone, and computer. Without these gadgets, I would not get through the day. My life depends heavily on these gadgets. I have everything from personal information to confidential information stored in them. It is strange that we were just discussing in our week 5 discussion about our children depending on these gadgets to fulfill their days. Well, it appears that the apple does not fall to far from the tree. The same support we depend on is passed to our children.

  14. Blog Assignment Wk. 2

Hi Class, I have selected to discuss the newsletters on “Zero to Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families”. I selected the newsletter “From Baby to Big Kid”. This parent’s newsletter addresses and offers science based information on how children learn and grow each month from birth through age 3. The newsletter also includes “age-based information about the child’s development”, “in depth articles on common child-rearing issues and challenges”, “Parent-child play activities that promote bonding”, “frequent asked question”, and research on child development and what it means for parents.: according to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, “Developmental stuttering may occur when a toddler’s desire to speech exceed speech and language abilities “. You can also registrar to receive newsletter to your email address for any new updates. Below is the website listed for further information on the newsletters. There is a questions and answer section where you can ask question and get a response from professionals within the field of early childhood. I read a comment concerning a caretaker, who was concerned that her child was 3 years of age has started to stutter. The profession addressed the caretaker’s concerns and addressed the caretaker’s concerns, stating that “stuttering is not uncommon between the age of 2 and 5 as children learn to put sounds and words together to form their thoughts and phrases.” The newsletter also stated that” toddlers have so much to say”. This is a good website for caretaker with children from birth to 3 years of age. If anyone has concerns about children within this age bracket, they could go to the site to address any concerns with the professional within the educational field. “When this happens, toddlers may begin to stutter until their spoken language skills have caught up.

  18. Zero to Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families

Zero to three has been known for their leadership abilities in the infant family field. The organization brings specific expertise in the area of infant mental health and reflective practices and program development. For decades they have published professional journals and convened the field’s premier professional development conferences.
The specific section that caught my attention and is related to my current profession is their other areas of expertise. Their areas of expertise includes, The National Training Institute, which have over 1700 professional working in leadership roles in the areas of child care, early intervention, family support , child welfare, and health and mental care. Working in my field, it consists of training daycare personnel in every line of employment. I am responsible for every employee on my caseload. I have approximately 660 employees and 30 daycare centers/ home that I am responsible for. That includes training, back ground checks, and all the children in these agencies. I work directly with the type of professional Zero to Three networks with.
The organization has a resource area called Little kid, Big Question. There is a series of 12 podcast that translates the research of early childhood developing into parenting practice that mothers, fathers, and other caregivers can tailor to the needs of their own children. There is an area to click to listen to or download the podcast. The podcast are funded through MetLife Foundation. I feel that these podcast will be beneficial to anyone needing this type of service.
There is an area under Behavior and Development (Brain Development) Stating that the first three years of life area a period of incredible growth in all area of the baby’s development. The resource states that about 25 percent of newborns brain approximates adult weight. By the age of 3, the brain has grown dramatically by producing billions of cells and hundreds of trillions of connections, or synapses, between these cells. In this section parents can learn about many ways how they can help their children get off to a good start and establish healthy patterns for life-long learning.
All of this information is new to me, reading Zero to Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families information is new to me. This would have been good information for me to use these practices with my son when he was an infant. I have gained a wealth of knowledge reading this information.

  20. Center on the Developing Child: Harvard University

Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University was found in 2006 on the belief that vitality and sustainability of any society depends on the extent to which it expands opportunities early within life for all children to achieve to their fullest potentials, engaging in responsible and productive citizenships. What really inspires me is their commitment to children and how they view healthy child development as the foundation of economic prosperity, strong communities, and a just society. Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University mission is to advance that vision by using science to enhance the well beings of the children they serve.
I am also impressed with the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University global initiative, which was just recently launched a Global initiative to focus on three strategies objectives:
    • “To reframe public discourse about early childhood periods by educating high level decision makers about the common underlying science of learning , behavior, and health;”
    • “To support innovative, multidisciplinary research and demonstrating projects in selected countries or regions to expand global understanding how healthy development occurs, how it can be derailed and how it can get back on track.”
    • “To build leadership capacity in child development research and policy among individuals and institutions in low-middle income countries in order to increase the number and influences of diverse perspectives that may be contributing to the global movement on behalf of young children.”
I believe that this is the type of dedication and commitment we need to create a better society for all in a global perspective. I have also learned through my previous classes in education at Walden that science and education plays mostly on the development of children, emotionally, environmental , and physically. Reading the journal through the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University has added to my knowledge of one more organization that is working in the best interest of our children, using scientific data and proven statistics to connect the world together as a whole. All of this information is new to me and I really enjoyed reading this journal. The journal also has video podcasts on the organization and their scientific viewpoints available for public viewing and listening. The podcast can be translated in non- English for Spanish speaking people.

  21. Zero TO THREE: Crying and Fussiness

This week I would like to share the newsletter I read on Crying and fussiness within babies. I reviewed a podcast on Crying and fussiness. This program is sponsored through Met-Life Insurance. The speaker is Dr. Pam High. Dr. Pam High is the Director of Infant Behavior at Brown Medical Institute Cry and Sleep Program. According to Dr. Pam High, “Crying is cited as being the number 2 most challenging behavior, following temper tantrums. Crying is a form of communication given off by the baby to connect and bond with the parent. This type of behavior happens when there is stress within the baby and this is the baby’s first form of communication with the care taker. Dr. Pam High stated that this is the baby’s first step in connection to getting what they want (Sleep, crying, and eating) during the first three days. The first stage of crying will last from 6 to 8 weeks. 25 percent of the babies will cry at 2 and half hours within 24 hours and will improve to 3-4 hours daily. Dr. Pam High offers some suggestion on how to help parents with the stress of handling these situations. She suggests that we keep a dairy on the baby’s behaviors from day to day, write down the hours the behaviors occur, and the type of behavior. She suggested that the caretaker reverse their sleep habits to fit the baby’s nap time. She stated that the babies will usually sleep from 3-4 hours, but this may not be a good thing. Dr. Pam High asked that the caretaker not take advantage of these hours because the baby may need to be fed in between those 3-4 hours. She suggests that although pacifiers feeding may help between those hours, breast feeding is best. Once the pacifier’s falls out of the baby’s mouth, the baby will wake up and begin to cry. She stated that some babies will adapt to the pacific, some will not. Pacifiers are protection for only a certain amount of time. She stated that nothing can ready identify why a baby is crying in categories. She stated that mothers and babies feed off each other and the best method is to study and watch the baby’s behavior patterns, and within time you will have a better communication bond with the baby. Dr. Pam High states that crying is not a crisis, it is a mystery.
I have really learned a lot from Zero TO THREE. Every week there is something new to broaden my knowledge in Early Child Education. Dr. Pam High has really opened my eyes to watch the podcast on Crying and fussiness through learning about the first stage of crying could last from 6 to 8 weeks. 25 percent of the babies will cry at 2 and half hours within 24 hours and will improve to 3-4 hours daily. This could be a difficult period for parenting, but rewarding with the information l gained from reading the newsletter. Another insight I have gained is crying is not a crisis, it is a mystery. I remember when my son was a newborn, it was devastating for me. I had always had a fear that something was wrong. This web- site would have helped me to overcome some of the fears I had when my son was a newborn. Now, I have something else to add to my knowledge. This is a resourceful web-site

  23. Final Blog Assignment

One of the consequences I have learned about and have concerns about is the struggles other countries are facing regarding to the steady growth and development of promoting early education in in their countries regarding the early education field. It appears that other countries are having the same issues and trends we are having here in America. These international countries’ children are at risk of receiving the proper education needed to be productive citizen in their country. I have had the opportunity to review the web-sites /podcasts and have gained immense knowledge on the resources available. This information has really helped in my professional development.
Another Issue or consequences in my professional development is that I am seeing is the poverty statistics around the world. We have organization reaching out to help eliminate hunger in these countries, but have limited resources and funding in connecting to everyone needing assistance. This was very upsetting for me to find that poverty is other countries is high statically and, then to read and find that my city, Memphis Tennessee is ranked 3rd in the nation on a national level on the poverty level. This really hit home for me and gave me a wakeup call.
My final consequences are that I have gained information on what is happening to other countries and their struggle in regards to early education. Many of the children have to quit school in most countries because they are needed to help their families meet their living standards. Most of these families are leaving their countries in hope of a better future in American.
My goal on relating to international awareness is to be as informative as possible. I would like to share what I have learned with people needing resources to better their living standards. I want to be an advocate for people of diversity, building a trust between these families, partnerships, and providing unlimited resources. I would like to be a mentor to these families; steer heading them in the right direction. I believe that we need to be especially mindful of people of diversity, welcoming them to their new world, embracing thoughts and respecting who they are, and accepting their culture without prejudice.

  24. What Resonates With Me About Early Childhood Public Policy and Advocacy?

    Part1

I chose to specialize in early childhood education for the following reasons. I have already had the opportunity to work on a secondary level with children and I thought it would be wonderful to experience working with the children in the early stages of their life. I come from a long line of educators / family members whom have worked with children during the early stages of their life. As a child, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I have a great love for children and I want to be an advocate for the children and their families. I want to be work in the best interest of the families and children, ensuring that that have the tools and resources available to help ease any fears that they may have. I hope to gain and accomplish trust of the families and children t, build partnerships and form network with businesses, medical personnel, and politicians.

    Part 2
Advocates are essential for many reasons. We need to ensure that our children have the tool to succeed in school. We must ensure that our teachers are getting high performance training with continuation of training g in their fields of study consistently. We need educators to be trained in areas outside of education. Educators need to be trained in handling the different issues that children may encounter while attending school; such as prejudice, race relation/ being different, poverty, housing, and hunger. I know that these are critical issues and I believe that I have the tools to refer these families and children to the program needed to overcome these issues. I have over 25 years of working with program to help these families overcome these issues.

    Part 3
I hope to gain knowledge from my peers and my instructor. I want to gain the necessary skills I need to advance my knowledge in advocacy, connecting resources to the population I serve, advocating for the children and families, and promoting a better future tomorrow.

  25. Quality Programs for All Children

My perspective of the public opinion in regards to quality for all children. I believe that the public opinion is well when it comes to high quality education for the children. Also, I believe that everyone wants what is best the children, on a personal note. There are also some people who believe that if you cannot afford high quality care for your children, perhaps your child shouldn’t be involved in the program. I believe that if we divide this question amongst class and social status, we will have three different opinions. As an educator and advocacy for children, I believe that all children inclusive should be given the same privileges, accessibility, and opportunities in receiving a high quality education, and trained by teachers with proven tools and skills to ensure that no child is left behind.
I have always been an advocacy for children. I was an advocacy for children even when I did not know I was. What has influence my thoughts are what I am seeing every day. I am proud of what I see when I walk into the day cares and day care homes. I am looking at caring professions, whom really love their professions and the children. These teachers are enjoying what they are doing, regardless of the salaries they receive. My job is to monitor these facilities and to ensure that they are in compliance With the federal and state government. Although most of the rule I am not in agreed with, the facilities must follow the rules to continue getting funding.
The current opinion of the government right now in my Memphis Tennessee is to cut jobs in the education field. I have witness teachers, custodial staff, and administrators lose their jobs. Shelby County is going through consolidation of the school systems. Several employees were told that they will no longer be employed. I blame the city council for making this decision to consolidate both schools without looking at how many teachers, custodial staff, and administer would be needed in the new consolidation plan. The public is not taking this action well. It appears that money again is an issue and the welfare of the children and the staff is not being considered.
I believe that if we continue this thought of capitalizing on money, blaming other and not taking ownership of our actions; we will continue the same process we have for the past 100 years. We must carefully develop a plan/goal, look at the pros and cons of this goal, examine the process in a way for improvement, and expand in a positive way to create a better work relation for ourselves and the future of our children.

  26. Head Start and Family Involvement

Head start is a wonderful program. As I have stated earlier during one of my communications, my son attended Head Start from the age of 2 through 5 years of age. This program has so much to offer to the public. I have learned even more by listening to media and my readings for this week. Head Start has a very rich history and works to embrace the family, children, and the community. Head Start does more than just educates the children of these families. Head Start also offers continuing education and job placement for the parents of these children. Head Start networks and partner with companies to help these families meet self -sufficiency to overcome most deficiencies they may encounter. Head Start has a family service program that works to help with assistance families in need of medical attention connecting these families with medical professionals. I believe that Head Start has a well-defined purpose and commitment to help those individual in their program and have a referral system through the families they serve. Head Start is making a powerful statement in empowering these families, since the early 1960s.
I believe that if the stories of these parents were heard by people making the decision to cut funding, it would be known as fact that Head Start is a stepping stone for the children, their parents, and the community and to those listening to the stories of these families being told. The decision maker will truly see that this program is well received by the communities in all aspects. Head Start has made many changes in the life of others and will continue to work in the best interest of every family inclusively. Head Start serves people of diversity and has employees of different culture serving the cause to make a better life for all within their program.
I have truly gained a lot of knowledge this week. I have 2 Head Start programs that I manage within Shelby County. I have had the opportunity to work directly with these professions, monitoring the operations of the programs, ensuring that compliance is in place, and conduct back ground checks on all employees. Now I have another area to add to my knowledge of the Head Start program. I have gained even more knowledge through my class assignments for this week and look forward to sharing my thoughts with others. The relationship between these families and Head Start is impeccable.

  28. Continuous funding for Education

The strategies I would like to discuss are funding and also steps outside the box to discuss teacher’s qualifications, and their part in meeting the “No Child Left Behind” law. First, I believe that every child should be able to receive a high quality education within the school’s systems. Also, I believe that parental involvement must be there in order to help the children meet their goals. I have learned that it also take the community to be involve in these children lives. This study includes the community, business, medical personnel, reaching out to the community and accessing information on how to get involved, where are the greatest needs, and a plan of action to meet the needs of these families and children. I believe that the more people involved in the lives of these children, the better opportunity the caretaker would have in supplying the necessities needed for a better chance in life for the child. This bond depends on the success of these children in being successful in the studies. I believe that when there are connections to all parties involved, creates a better tomorrow for everyone. I believe that resources are a commodity to the future of our society and there must someone available to focus on being a reliable source of connection, and a referral system readily available to those seeking these services, if needed.
I believe that teacher’s qualification is really important. We need teachers whom are highly trained within their subject areas. We also need teachers whom are trained in subject such as prejudices, race relations, diversity, poverty, housing, and teaching self- sufficiency. A teacher needs to be trained in any area relating to issues a child may encounter. I believe that the better equipped the teacher is in recognizing the issues, the more comfortable or confidence the teacher will have in handling the issue at hand.
The “No Child Left Behind” law really appeals to me. I believe that the “No Child Left Behind” law carried out in most states has crippled our society. I understand that the primary focus is on the children, but I’m also aware that we have some teachers whom have worked all their life with holding the best interest of the child and this law has created a hardship for many teachers. These teachers are not compensated for their hard work and long after hours of work in their fields. A teacher job does not end when the children leaves the classroom. There is work beyond 4:30p.m.. There are after school meetings, parent/ teacher conferences on the telephone, grading papers, lesson plans, and perhaps 1-2 hours left before retiring to bed engage in quality family time with their own families. The life of the teacher is not an easy task. I believe that we must stop looking for problems within our society, but find solutions to fix the problems. We need to make a change in thoughts from what we see as the norms in our society creative by us and become proactive in a resolution that works for all of us.

  29. You have listed at least two issues that I am also compelled to fight for in our field. I think that there were good intentions behind NCLB but I also believe that the bad is out weighing the good. I find it easier to determine issues that I want to fight for, and more difficult identifying how to fight for them.

    Great Post!

  30. I think that we need to fight these issues through congress. We may need to follow the old plans as we witness and were implemented during the early 60s in advocating for the issues at hand. If we sit quietly, we have loss the voice that could have been heard. It worked during the past; we just need to resurface this issue and reunite together.

  32. My Hypothetical Family

My hypothetical family consists of a single parent with four children. The mother’s name is Gwen Cooper and the children names are Mitchell, Marvin, Darlene, and Yvonne Cooper. Marvin and Mitchell are twins. One of the twins was born normal and one child was born as a special needs child. Darlene and Yvonne were born without any abnormal features and are normal. Gwen, the mother of these children works for a daycare center within the local area and earns $7.25 an hour. Gwen uses the bus as her transportation. The children walk to school every day. The family receives financial assistance from Family First, which is about $550.00. The father was killed shortly after Yvonne was born. Yvonne is the baby of the family. The family lives in a three bedroom home. Gwen received a call from the police department stating that Marvin is in custody. Gwen has to leave work to pick Marvin up from the detention center at the local juvenile court. Gwen will not be paid for those hours because just stated working and have not accumulated any leave time. I have given a full picture of this family.
This is a realistic situation because I am familiar with a family situation like this, but the names of the family have been changed to protect the privacy of the family names.
Yes there are web sites to review regarding families in crisis situations.
I am sure that someone will have some questions about the family I have created. One might want to know what happened when Gwen went to pick up Marvin. One might want to know how Gwen meets her family financial needs, how she is coping with Mitch, her special needs child, and how Darlene and Yvonne fits in the family setting.

  33. Richard,
While your family situation seems very realistic, I thought the assignment was to create a family that is about to give birth to a child with special needs. Perhaps you can consider reframing the family where Gwen is about to give birth to Yvonne and she is the one with developmental delays. Also, what are the services that you would be looking to create for this family? What specific developmental delays are you writing about? Are they health related special needs? Also, who does Gwen have as a support for her and the family currently and where do the children receive care and education?

  34. Richard,

I agree with Terri. Since we are in an Early Childhood Program and discussing comprehensive systems, you were suppose to develop a hypothetical situation based upon what we have learned thus far about comprehensive systems. I suggest you go back to the questions listed in the application instructions.

  36. My Reflection of My Journey in Early Childhood Education as a Professional

First, I would like to thank my classmates for sharing their thoughts, ideas and concerns with me. I have learned so much from all of you. This class was the most rewarding of all the classes I have taken here at Walden. For the first time I was able to feel comfortable in meeting deadline for the assignment and openly expressing my opinion with my classmates and instructor without fear. I believe that I have truly bonded with my instructor and classmates and it really feels very appreciative to me to have such wonderful people group of people in my surroundings.
Post at least three consequences of your experience being a part of a caring, collaborative learning community for your professional growth and development.
    1. I have had the opportunity to grow at my own pace, developing my thoughts through reading materials, r000esearching and gather supported references to support my thoughts.
    2. I have had the opportunity to share my thoughts with my colleagues, while getting the needed support from my instructor and classmate to expand on the subject matters and to improve my former drafts.
    3. I have developed the knowledge needed to become a better advocate for the cause of the children and families I serve. Now, I have a better understanding in doing what I need to do to become a referral source for the families in need of social services. Now, I know what I need to do to get the service needed for these families.

Post one goal for using this collegial experience to enhance your advocacy, policy, and/or system development work on behalf of young children, families, and the early childhood community.

My goal is to use everything that I have learned in this class to promote a better life for the families I am serving. I will use the knowledge I have learned from my classmates and instructor, as well as the knowledge I have gained through my own research.

  37. My Personal Advocacy Reflection

My personal advocacy reflection comes from a person named Dr. Robert L. Waller. Dr. Waller was a history professor at Lemoyne -Owen- College in Memphis Tennessee. Lemoyne is a black private college that was established in 1876. This college was first introduced as a college for Negro teachers, and then later migrated in other areas of education such as Science, Math, and Engineering. Dr. Waller took me under his wings, molded, and cultivated me into the person I am today. I have so much from Dr. Waller and I want to share what I have learned with someone else. I want to be mentor to others in horror of Dr. Waller. Dr. Waller did not have any children and was never married. Dr. Waller devoted his entire life to advocacy for the children and really loved what he did. I remember when I took a class from him. I missed several classes that he had taught. He came to my home, took me out to dinner, and asked, “Why are you missing my class”. I didn’t know how to respond to him. I did not answer his question and he never asked me that question again. At the end of that semester, I received a C for my grade. I needed to receive at least a B to graduate. I went to his office to discuss my grade. Dr. Waller told me that I had changed my ways and if I don’t get myself together, I will not graduate. I ended up having to take the class over and received an A for my final grade. This has really impacted most of the decision I have made in life and also relates to my job duties today. I have learned that no one is going to give you nothing that you have not worked for and that honesty is the best policy. I have learned that in order to do a good job in your studies, you must be devoted in doing a good job in studying and retaining the information needed to pass on to the next level. Dr. Waller was trying to tell me that if I wanted to be a good historian, I must develop the tools to expose to other, giving them the knowledge they need to pass on to others. Dr. Waller passed away one year after I graduated. I will always remember his kindness and what He had done for me. I want to the candle of light and pass that light on to someone else. I would like to be remembered as someone who worked in passion for the love of all children.

  38. Hi Richard,
Thanks for sharing your personal experience. I too have had a handful of teachers who were very empowering and inspiring. Probably the reason I went in to teaching myself. How wonderful that your professor cared enough to show up so personally in your life and good for him for not giving you the grade you needed. He made you earn it, which I believe, is how we learn appreciation and gratitude.

On a lighter note, I don't know if you noticed this error, but I found it quite humorous:) Surely you meant to say "honor" and I don't mean to minimize the importance of this man's life. I just got a giggle out of it,...

  40. My Role as an Advocate
What motivated you to start advocating for very young children? My motivation came to me at very early age. I knew as a youth that I wanted to become a teacher. I believe teachers are the first point contact in identifying most related issues within their student’s personalities. The child may be in need of food, shelter, abuse, neglect, and other issue. Teachers are aware of the changes in the behavior of the child. The child may appear withdrawn or isolated. Teachers are resourceful in finding referral or referring that child to counseling at the school or an outside agency.
Why is it essential to acknowledge and foster advocacy efforts at the micro as well as the macro level?
It is important to acknowledge and foster advocacy at micro level because micro-advocacy operates on the scale of the individual child. Equally important is acknowledging and fostering advocacy at macro level, across a district, a state, or the nation. I believe that you must have knowledge of both Micro and Macro, and that is being able to work on a local, state, or national level.
What does it take to be a community leader on early childhood issues?
    • Organize the Stakeholders: Identify the group of people affected by the policy. Recruit to help you reach your goals. Policy makers must be aware that there are many who have a vested interest in the outcome. A good leader will delegate. However there must be a person willing to take the point and move the effort forward.

    • Articulate the Desired Outcome: Have a vision and a mission.

    • Acquire the Requisite Knowledge: An advocate must educate him/herself about the issues involved in attaining the desired goals.

    • Of the History: You must be able to argue the point. If you can’t argue the point, you may not fully understand the conditions.

    • Of What Works:. Bring your research material to the policy makers (Templeton report, the CEEP, and the Fordham report).

    • Of the Process: Find out what else is on the agenda. Election campaigns are powerful opportunities to ask question relating to the issues you may want to discuss.

    • Of who is Involved: Find out where the powerbase is and target that person:

    • Determine the Message: Voice your concerns. Craft the message to match the recipient.

    • Determine the Means to Deliver the Message: Letter, email, informal personal visits and formal meetings, petitions, and the media.

    • Evaluate the Process: Build on something positive and make it happen

What resources does it take to be a state leader on early childhood issues? Getting involved, helping families receive the needed services, stands up for someone that is being treated unfairly, attending parent teacher’s conferences at your child’s school, and participating in city councils and knowledge of all the above characteristics above.
What tactics or strategies do you use to mobilize others? I talk about what is going on in that person’s life. I use my communications to mobile others. I find that by communicating with people, they are more willing to open up and talk to you about any issues that they may have. Then, I use my resources to refer those individuals to social services that can help with the issues addressed.
What advice would you give to someone who was interested in taking a leadership role in advocating for young children and their families? I tell him/ her that I’m glad to hear that and that we need as many leaders as possible. The more leaders we have, the better opportunities we have to solve the issues we are facing. I would introduce that individual to other leaders in the field as a mentor in developing the skills this person needed to become a leader.

  41. Great Post!

You make a really important point that motivating others to become advocates is as important as advocating for a particular issue. Sharing stories and talking about issues is a great way to mobilize others.

  42. Advocacy in Developing Passions

I am developing a true passion in advocacy for the children. To me it does not matter what area of advocacy you would like to support, just get involved in the fight. Many of us are searching to find our passions in several ways, but we must understand that passion exists everywhere. We must first develop the wisdom of passion within us. Wisdom is where the true passion starts from. To find your passion, you may want to ask yourself these questions, what are you afraid to admit, what you love about yourself, and how do you motivate or encourage other people.
Now it is time to go on a treasury hunt of discoveries within you. Discover your past memories by asking these questions, who are the people that motivated you? how were you motivated by these people?, and then reunite your past memories with your present memories. Please note that asking questions are very powerful. The more questions you ask, the more your passion you will develop. Ask yourself what do you want people to remember about you?, what would you do if you knew you were about to leave this earth, but that you couldn’t fix what was needed to be done most in your life?, If money was not a problem, how much would you contribute to someone else life?. What would you regret not doing in life? Use your talents to expose other to their hidden treasuries. Volunteer your time to others. Start with understanding of what really make your juices flow.
One of my specials skill is I am a strong person. I am the person that most people want to talk to, when problems arises. I am a good listener. If you tell something, I will keep it confidential. I don’t judge other people. I treat everyone the same way I want to be treated.
I have an array of resources. I am a dedicated person on my job and in my personal life. I am a people’s person, I am willing to lead as well as follow. A good leader knows how to follow and when to follow, and I am a self-starter, reliable, resourceful, and eager to learn new things.
I believe that my people skills have developed a talent to engage in advocacy for the children and their families. It is my passion to do whatever I have to do to make a difference is the life of someone else. Making a difference in the life of others, just helping one person at a time is a milestone for me. My availability is there for anyone in need, and again I am a very resourceful person.
My growth begins with being available to assist when needed. My growth is taking one step at a time working on overcoming the issues at hand. Belonging is the best part of being an effective advocate. My final thought for everyone is, be the change that you wish you could see in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Richard,
I appreciate your questions and agree wholeheartedly with the statement, "be the change you want to see in the world." It is, however, much more easily said than done:). Advocacy is definitely an inner journey as much as it is an outward expression of love and service. So much growth has happened for me already and I'm sure much more is to come as I continue on this journey. Thank you for being a part of my journey.

  45. Advocacy Messages

This was an interesting assignment for me. I did not know that The Ad Council offered so many messages, the Ad Council is a private, non-profit organization that marshals volunteer talent from the advertising and communications industries, the facilities of the media, and the resources of the business and non-profit communities to deliver critical messages to the American public.

    • The Ad Council offers assistance and messages on Bullying Prevention: This message offers support to families whose children have gone through bullying. According to statistics nearly 1 in 4 children in the U.S. reports experiences with bullying, which includes 80% of high school students? 46. Social Media

I am not familiar with social media at all. I have found out that that social media can be an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time. I t depends on how you use it. I do believe that it is important to be selected in choosing your friends. You must be careful of what you place in your page. I just had a colleague whom was force to resign from her position. She went out on medical leave stating that she had some type of illness and would be off for two months. Actually she was pursuing another career in elementary education. She posted picture of herself going out partying, and messages of her new career and how excited she was in her new job. One employee who was her social media friend informed her supervisor and this was the end of her friend’s career with my department.
I believe that social media can be beneficial if it is used in the right content. My 15 years of age son is a wiz when it comes to technology and social media activities. He is good at everything. I have to closely monitor his activities to ensure his safety. I am constantly talking to him about the good forms of communication and the bad forms of these communication activities. I am familiar with Facebook, I have a whopping 35 friends. Wow, that is a lot of friends. Today, there are so many ways to communicate with people and there is a growing need to find other ways of communication. We have come a long ways and we depends more and more on creating tools to find better ways to communicate. Also, I go on YouTube to listen to music or observed movies.
I know that I will have to be more involved in becoming a part of social media, since my plans are to work in advocacy for the children and their families. This is going to be a big change for me, but I am looking forward to the challenge.

  47. I agree that we have to be selective in who choose to be friends with on these sites. However, it's fun to create to pages and talk to other people about your advocacy efforts and getting the word out is a little bit easier when using those sites. Good post!

  49. Profile of an Advocate
The person I would like to profile is a dear friend of mines, named Priscilla Herron. Priscilla was a former student at Walden University. Priscilla started attending Walden as a freshman and continued through the program, receiving a master’s degree in the ECE Program. Priscilla is a single parent and has three children. Priscilla stated that she had her first child at the age of 16. Pricilla informed me that she was determined to beat the odds and not fall through the cracks. She was determined to continue her education in ECE. Pricilla also inspired me to go back to school and recruited me in the early childhood education field. I received my bachelor degree in 12/83. I have been out of school almost 30 years. She has helped me with navigating through on-line classes. This was a very difficult task for me. Of all my classes here at Walden, this class has been my most difficult class. I was informed by my previous instructors that each class gets harder. My instructors were right.
When I have questions regarding some of my assignments, Priscilla is there to help me. I really don’t like to bother her, but if she does not hear from me she will call to ask me how my class is going. It is people like Priscilla that is there in a person’s time of need, supporting, caring and pushing me to the next level to advocate and fill void spaces in life for the children and families in ECE.
Priscilla was a former employee of State of Tennessee, Daycare Licensing. She left the State of Tennessee to pursue her dream as a director at Kinder Care Day Care. She stated that she was excited to work for Kinder Care as a director. Priscilla used me as a reference, prior to getting the job. She stated that she was afraid, after accepting the position. She was afraid because this was her first job where she is responsible for the operations of the center, and responsible for the hiring process. I assured Priscilla that she would not have any problems in running the daycare. I informed Priscilla that I have corporate leadership skills in customer service and operational experiences. I told her I will be there for her if she has any questions or I will find the answer for her if needed. Priscilla is on the board for the Shelby County’s Girl’s Club in Memphis. She is truly a mentor to the girl’s club. After she gets off work on Thursday’s night, she goes to the girl’s club to work with the children. She counsels the girl on any problems that they may be encountering.
Priscilla has been a positive impact to my life. First, in inspiring me to go back to school. Secondly, helping me to stay focused on my assignments, and last, helping to navigate through the portal system.
Pricilla have a real love for volunteering to help at any capacity. She stated that her doors to her office, home, and telephone are always available if she is needed. The big take away is that Pricilla doesn’t have to devote her time to care or advocate for other, but she takes time out of busy schedule to assist others. Priscilla is a real trooper when it comes to advocacy for the children and their families.

  50. My Personal Birth Experience

    Part 1

I am the father of two children. I have a 30 years of age daughter name Candance and 15 years of age son, Richard. Candance is new into my life, as of December 20, 2013. I receive a telephone call, asking that I contact her. The voice mail stated that she had been trying to contact me for several years. She told me that I had dated her mother while attending Le-Moyne – Owen, and she was informed that I was her biological father. The moment I received that call, I was in so much shock after receiving the call. Candace’s mom moved away to California, shortly after her birth, got married and has two other children. Candance informed me that she had a beautiful life, and was adopted by her stepfather. I prayed that this wasn’t some Jerry Springer call. I decided to call that next day. Candance and I conversed for hours, catching up on our lost pass. Candance assured me that she didn’t want anything from me. Although I wasn’t physically part of her life at birth, she has sent me several pictures of her life as a child, including pictures from my grandson’s birth, Nathaniel. Candance stated that she was not interesting in our past, she was concerned with who I was, my thoughts, and getting to know me better. This was the best Christmas present of my life, to connect with my daughter after 30 years. Now, I would like to share my personal experience of the birth of my son, Richard II, Richard was born March 29, 1998. I was married at the time of Richard’s birth. Richard’s mom walked into the room and stated that she had urinated on herself. I said no sweetheart, your water has broken. I had already prepared for this day, then off to the hospital. My wife was in labor for another 12 hours. Richard was born at 5:30am. My wife was going through so much pain. I watched as my son was being delivered and his cord being cut by the doctor. I was informed by the doctor that my son had been in my wife stomach too long, and my son was at risk of brain damage/ oxygen. The nurses did not respond to my wife timely. The doctor asked that he cut the cord to avoid any damages. I informed the doctor to carry on with his plan; I was okay with his decision. Richard was born in good health and is doing well today.

  51. My Personal Birth Experience

    Part II

I chose these examples for the following reason. One reason is I missed out on the birth and several precious years of my daughter life; we are becoming closer and closer each day. We are communicating regularly and sending photos of ourselves to each other. Although I wasn’t physically part of her life at birth, she has sent me several pictures of her life as a child, including pictures from my grandson’s birth, Nathaniel. I must say that there is nothing like witnessing the birth of your child. IT was if I watched my seed grow into a productive human-being. I will never forget that moment. Class, I am so excited about my daughter and grandson. I just wanted to share this news with you. My thoughts regarding birth and child development is crucial. It is important the birth mothers get all the prenatal care needed to have a healthy baby. It is also important that we have the resources available to ensure everyone receives the care need to produce a healthy baby; babies.
“The region of the world I decided to choose is South Africa. South Africa Birth rate out of 1000 people is 19.14 South Africa Birth rate – Demographics, 2014”. The majority of the children born ate not born within a hospital. Some of the children are aborted because of rape and other unforeseen events
    Country: South Africa:
    2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 24.56 21.12 20.63 18.87 18.38 18.48 18.2 17.94 20.23 19.93 19.61
    2011 2012
    19.48 19.32

. On comparison to what I have learned is good. I have learned from my readings that South Africa is promoting change in their birth rate through providing referrals and resources to protect the children from being rape. I t shameful to the parents of these children, and these children are often thrown to the streets by their parents for these mishaps in their lives. I remember seeing a documentation on channel 10 (WKNO), regarding rape cases of children, and their outcome. The documentation was not well received for me .I believe that more should be done by the government to control the actions of the rape cases within South Africa.

  52. Nutrition/Malnutrition

I decided to use nutrition/malnutrition as a health measures that affect child development as a whole. According to statistics, all children need to be provided a well balance meal. I am a program evaluator for the State of Tennessee, and one of my job descriptions is to ensure that the agencies I oversees are equipped in maintaining 3 well balanced meals daily, including 2 snacks. We are all aware that in order for a child to perform well in school, the child must have a well balance nutritional meal. Well balanced meals can also include sack lunches.

We all know that when children do not eat well, it could lead to malnutrition, which could lead to obesity, which eventually hurts the child later on in life. Therefore, it is imperative that all children eat 3 healthy well balanced meals. It is also a known fact that when we fail to promote every child the opportunity to eat nutrition meals, children tend to not do as well in their performance at school. When our children eat healthy meals, their school’s performance tends to fall in the right direction, using best practices in the best interest of the children (Well Balance Meals for Children (2014).”
This topic is very meaningful to me. I remember as a child I was not as fortunate as most children during my early years in school. I remember going to school many days with just a peanut butter sandwich and 5cents to purchase milk for lunch. I thanked god, when free lunch launched for disadvantaged children. I believe the free lunch program was introduced in America during the year of 1964. The meals today are mandated by the federal and state government, and the programs are monitored through the Department of Human Services and Department of Education.
The country I selected is Africa. School meals in Africa are unlike the meals the student receives here in America. Many children in Africa often and actually have to miss school in order to earn money. “It is crucial that these children work and take part in subsistence farming activities so that their families may have enough food to survive (Build Africa, 2014).” Some of these children are malnutrition and receives as few as half the calories they need. “Therefore, these children are more vulnerable to infections and leads to increased absenteeism and poor academic results (Build Africa, 2014).” There are several other third worlds’ countries with statistics, such as Africa. The United States have poverty within our country. Memphis was ranked as # 3 on a national level. Poverty exists everywhere. It may be not as bad here in my hometown, Memphis as it is in the third world countries. But the truth is that it exists, and there is a lot that needs to be done universally to ensure that all people have the opportunity to live a wholesome full life of self-sufficiency and equality.
The information I have learned is very beneficial in many ways. First, I am grateful in having the opportunity to further my career in something that I enjoy doing. I love children very much. Every time I hear anything relating to children, it gains my full attention. I have plans to use this wealth of knowledge I have gained to expose to others in a positive light, and hope that this pattern continues within others following my path.

    1. Hello Richard,
You have a very nice blog. I totally agree with you concerning children eating a proper meal. There are many children who rely on the school food program for their only enriched meal of the day. Parents are so quick to feed their children junk food and noodles. You are doing a wonderful thing. Keep up the good work.

  53. Hi Richard, your post gives a wealth of information on the importance of children receiving well balanced meals. I am currently on a food program through Porter-Leath, which has been very beneficial to my home daycare. By feeding children healthy meals they are more cooperative and eager to learn throughout each day. I also believe this creates a bond with children and adult caregivers, because once they realize that their basic needs are met, they become emotionally attached.

  55. Consequences of Stress on Children's Development
The childhood stress on child development I would like to discuss is poverty and hunger. I believe that all of these stressors can be combined together into one to make up a whole person. “Everyone experiences sadness, irritability, or low energy from time to time (Make the Connection, 2014)”. )” My thoughts are that this stressor can make or break a person, depending on a person’s self-esteem. I can speak on these stressors, because I am a product of these genres. Although I was born the son of share- cropper mother and father. I was instilled with a sense of pride that I learned from my parents. I was taught that if not about how much money person has, but how you manage what you have accomplished in life. I have already stated in most of my previous former communication, how life was not a feeling of getting everything I wanted as a child, it has made me appreciate life in a meaningful way. There are several individual whom may have been given a worse hand than I have experienced in life. I would not change nothing in life I have experience.” If you have depression, it can be hard to do everyday activities and you may have problems with your relationships (Make the Connection, 2014 )”.There were times in my life when I observed children bringing lunch to school with a fruit, a sandwich with meat, and milk; while I ate a peanut butter sandwich and milk. At that time I didn’t know any better. Once I had a child that asked me to switch sandwiches with him. I was so elated; I grabbed his sandwich before he changed his mind. I ate peanut butter sandwiches at least 3 times a week. “If left unchecked, eating problems can affect your health and the way you feel about yourself, and could even result in serious eating disorders or weight gain (Make the Connection, 2014).” I did experience getting hungry. There was a young boy who rode the bus with me. I knew that every day his sister would buy him cookies for his snack on the way home. This little boy left his snack on the bus to go outside looking for his sister. I walked to the back of the bus and ate his coolies up before he could get back to his seat. This little boy cried all the way home because I took his snack. I did not own up to eating his snack, when I was asked if I seen his snack. This was not a pleasant experience for me. I have learned a valuable lesson from this experience. I felt very bad after taking and just owned up to it, telling him only a week ago. This young man is my best friend today. He laughed at me and asked why it took me so long to tell him. I presented him with a box of cookies. This was a stressor for him at that time.
The region I would like to discuss is right here in my home town. There are several people in my home town, Memphis Tennessee experiencing poverty and hungry. Memphis Tennessee is ranked as number 3 on a national level. “There are approximately 1 out of 10 people experiencing poverty and hunger in Memphis (Commercial Appeal, 2013)”l. I was listening to the news last Thursday and was informed the three were several cuts to the food bank in Shelby County. They are accepting donations from the general public to help with their cause. There is a great need to overcome these barriers.

  56. I enjoyed reading your post. When reading your post I could feel the emotion you put into it. I to remember having lunches I may not have wanted. When I was in school my mother being a single parent had to apply for free lunch. I was at first embarrassed about going to request my free or reduced lunch. I had witness some people get made fun of because of it. I when I meet my best friend she would go in the line with me even though she didn't get free lunch just make sure I would eat and not feel uncomfortable.

  58. Part 1
    Assessment of Children
Today’s assessment of children requires more than just measurements using standardize testing to measure student’s academic achievements. I remember as a child there were comparisons of academic achievements between the black and white children’s testing, using standardized testing measurements. The white children were given a test base on the black community dialogues standardize testing’s, and the black children were give a test based on the current standardized testing in place today. The testing end result revealed that the white student scored lower than the black children on the black standardized testing, and the black children scored lower that the white children on their standardized testing, which were the norms. An example was one of the following questions.
    1. A Cadillac is also known as:
    A. An automobile
    B. Hog
    C. Wagon
The correct answer is B on the black standardize testing and the correct answer on the white standardize testing is A.
My thought is that learning has a lot to do with the environment that the children live in. Usually, what is taught in the classrooms can be used and applied outside of the classroom. I’m not saying that one of the questions listed above are wrong. It was just a common factor within the black community, slang words were used widely within the community. A car was just called a car in the black community; the word automobile was not widely used in the community. Most of the people in the community drove Cadillac’s, and another name in the community for Cadillac was known as a hog. “It is also true that the gap shrinks only a little when black and white families have the same amount of schooling, the same income, and the same wealth (Jencks& Phillip, 1998).” “But despite endless speculation, no one has found genetic evidence indicating that blacks have less innate intellectual ability than whites (Jencks& Phillip, 1998).”
I believe that children should be measured in academics as a whole, and I also believe that they should be given the tools in measurement to develop the knowledge needed to exceed to the next level. In my last class, we discussed high quality education. We looked at the needs for high quality education, and what was needed to universally promote high quality education within the poorer communities. “In all aspects of the school and its surrounding education community, the rights of the whole child, and all children, to survival, protection, development and participation are at the centre (Defining Quality in Education, 2000)”. “We discussed the stake holders and their contributions to society. “When considering education, quality of educational service and stakeholder satisfaction can be taken as more important (Kasetwar. 2008).” We discussed getting our political figures involved. My thought that it is good to use standardized testing, but we need to ensure that the children are equipped to perform up to basic standards in passing these tests.
In other parts of the world such as Africa, children dream of going to school. It appears that most people in America do not appreciate a free education. Children in Africa are going to work at an early age, just to help the family keep food on the table. “In 2000 52 percent of children were enrolled in primary schools, the lowest enrollment rate of any region (Education in Africa, 2000)”. MY thoughts are that assessment in Africa has a lower focus on the children achievements, and in these children achieving the skills to gain self- sufficiency.

  59. Part 2

I would like to say to my colleagues that assessing children are very important in helping them to develop into productive individuals, and in adapting into society. I believe that we should use a wide range of selective measurements of our children. We need to use observation, as well as the scientific approach, use d by scientists. I have learned from readings within our assignments that we could miss out on some valuable statistics if we don’t consider both approaches. I believe that it is imperative that we follow clear directions in evaluating children. Evaluating our children could be positive and natural with the right formula and approach.

  67. My Personal Journey
The subject I chose to speak on is poverty and hunger, and how it affects children in progressing in their educational responsibilities. What stimulates me most on this topic is that there are so many children affected by poverty and hunger than the eyes can see. My thought is that we cannot expect the children to progress in school on an empty stomach. I have read articles on third world countries with the same problems manifesting in their countries, as we have right here in America. Even right in my hometown Memphis, Tennessee; we were ranked as number 3 in the nation on a poverty level. My thoughts are that if you live in poverty, one is likely to experience hunger at a point in their life.
I remember as a child experiencing hunger during my first year of school. My mother would pack a peanut butter sandwich in my bag, and give me a nickel for lunch. I ate my lunch on the prior to getting to school. Therefore at lunch time, I did not have anything to eat. This was not a good experience for me. I quickly learned the definition of hunger. This was a onetime experience for me, but there are millions of people experiencing poverty and hunger daily. This was a difficult day for me, and my concentration was not on my class assignments and the teacher. My thought was on my next meal.
I am a beginner on research. This is a fearful journey, because I thought I had what it took to research and find good sources. I am just going to take this journey day by day, knowing that research requires dedication, stream-lining, time management, and a commitment. I do know that I am going to need help from all of my colleagues. If you can give me any advice on research, I will welcome your sources with open arms. Please feel free to share any sources you may have to help me with my journey through research.

    Reading Research & Reports
I would like to share this web-site with my colleagues. This web-site has an array of information posted. The site discusses early reading proficiency in the United States. According to the report “Children who are proficient readers by the end of third grade are more likely to graduate from high school and to be economically successful in adulthood.” The KIDS COUNT data snapshot finds that 80 percent of fourth-graders from low-income families and 66 percent of all fourth-graders are not reading at grade level. There is an organization by the name of The Casey Foundation, which offers recommendations for communities and policymakers to support early reading. Most of us are aware that while some improvements have been made in the past decade, reading proficiency levels still remains low. Reading is critical when it comes to our nation’s future, and our children must be ready to compete with children from other countries. I have a young friend named Mitch. I took Mitch under my wings when he was just a child. Mitch had several problems in reading and pronouncing words. I work with Mitch relentlessly to help him build confidence in reading. I started off with the basics (ABC’S) and worked up to sounding the words out, then reading and associating objects/ pictures, until Mitch was able to feel comfortable in reading. Mitch is doing wonderful right now. He has become a mentor to the local boy’s club. Mitch is giving back to the community, and is also the proud owner of a well-known security company in Memphis Tennessee.

  69. Week 5 Blog
Early Childhood Development Capacity Building in Africa
    • What are some of the current international research topics?
The current international research topics in Africa are
    1. Improving the quality of life for children and their families in Africa.
    2. Innovative Approaches To Education And Partnership
    3. Generating a "Generative Curriculum" Approach
    4. Innovative Approaches To Education And Partnership
    5. Early Childhood Development Capacity Building in Africa

    • What surprising facts/insights/new ideas about early childhood did you gain from exploring this international early childhood website?
I found that through exploring this international early childhood website that the organization is committed to hit cause and requires many more leaders in early childhood care, education and development (ECD). The EDUVU is an innovative multi-faceted approach in addressing ECD leadership needs on Africa. EDUVU have an unique training and capacity building program using distributed learning techniques, including face to face seminars, internet, CD Rom and video-conferencing. The participants are both learners and teachers in this education model.

    • What other noteworthy information did you find on this website?
Some other noteworthy material I found on the website were
    1. Candidates were chosen by their country committees as promising leaders strategically positioned to function as key interactors, serving as transmitters, receptors and facilitators, within and outside their countries
    2. Participation in ECDVU is an asset not only in the candidates as capable and committed individuals, but also, and chiefly, in improving the well-being of children, families and communities in their countries.
    3. Participants are evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in moving forward ‘agendas for children’ in their countries.

In addition I found that each country team made a presentation unfolding their country’s “ripple effects”
activities to participants at the seminar in Bagamoyor, east central coast of Africa. Bagamoyo was the most important trading entrepot of the east central coast of Africa in the late 19th century. Bagamoyo's history has been influenced by Indian and Arab traders, by the German colonial government and by Christian missionaries. These presentations were captured on digital video, and are currently slated for transfer to VHS and PAL videotape. Copies
of the resulting video, which will provide an ECDVU “living document” of the ECD
networking and development advances country by country (from December 2001 to July
2002) will be available in October, 2002. A summary of the report are included in the following countries.

    1. Eritrea
    2. Ghana
    3. Kenya
    4. Lesotho
    5. Malawi
    6. Nigeria
    7. Tanzania

  70. When I Think of Research

What insights have you gained about research from taking this course?
Research has been very difficult for me. I am still struggling with how to ask research question. I believe that I have found the answer to discovering open and closed questions today, regarding interview. However, I am not completely sure. My thoughts of research question are totally different from the expectation of research. I feel as though I am attending school to become a scientist. I have a good idea if research in terms of definition paraphrasing, but struggle with this during the first week. I have learned to master application part 1 from week 1-7. . I have gained fresh knowledge in the differences between qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research studies. I am gaining a better knowledge than I did when class began. I have also gained knowledge on why research is important.
In what ways have your ideas about the nature of doing research changed?
I have learned that there are different approaches in research and not all research’s practices the same methods. I have learned that research is time consuming, and require finding source of validity, trusted sources, and that there are sources available that is not creditable, such as blog websites.
What were some of the challenges you encountered—and in what ways did you meet them?
My challenge is finding the time to do research with my workload on the job. My job requires that I am available 24 hours, in the event of a crisis on the job. I am usually up for long hours to complete my assignments. I have missed quality time with my family; knowing that I have a commitment within myself to overcome the challenges ahead of me.
What are some of the ways your perceptions of an early childhood professional have been modified as a result of this course?
My thought of an early childhood professional have not been modified. I have a genuine respect for all professionals in the educational field, it take a dedicated committed person to work with children. The job consists of before school and after school planning. The field is the future of our children in implementing education to higher level.

    1. My Identification
    2. Glasses
    3. Family photos

    • How you would explain to others what each of these items means to you
    1. My identification is my proof of residence and holds the traits of who I really am
    2. I need my glasses for directions and to see
    3. I need my family photos in remembrance my family and my family’s history captured.
    • Your feelings if, upon arrival, you were told that you could only keep one personal item and have to give up the other two items you brought with you.
I will feel robbed of my two items. I have already lost all of my possessions and feel pressured to give up everything else. I would just have to adapt with the loss of my Family photos and my glasses. Hopefully, I can receive assistance in getting glasses in my new country. I will just try to the memory of my past in my mind, sharing the family history and customs with the new generation of children to follow.

    • Any insights you gained about yourself, your family culture, diversity, and/or cultural differences in general, as a result of this exercise.
Yes, I never of this before. Now, I can begin to take actions, if needed. My mind is at a total freeze, right now. I cannot imagine how people, whom have had major catastrophe feelings. Wow, it could actually happen to me. We are just too much complacency in this country.

  72. Perspectives on Diversity and Culture
This was a very different assignment for me. My true thought is that I didn’t want the people that I interviewed to feel uncomfortable in discussing diversity and culture. I explained them that this interview is based on a classroom assignment for this week. This was my breaking point in breaking the ice with all interviewees. I believe that culture differences are hidden in some ways or that people do not discuss this topic much. I know that this is the first time I have ever discussed cultural and diversity with others, especially face to face. My thought is that people don’t really explore cultures of other people. Most people are just concerned with their thoughts of who they are, where they came from, and their goals for themselves or their family members.
My first interview was with a colleague named Cathy. Cathy defined cultural as, “The background and ways of living, within environment, beliefs, and traditions. Kathy defined diversity as, “Differences in everything, cultures, languages, way of life, race, national origin, and diverse”.
My second interview was with another colleague named Katrina. Katrina defined cultural as, “Diverse people of elements and things that makes connections to an individual/individuals, clothing, language, food, and music”. Katrina defines diversity as “Varies types of learning, individuality, race, sex, languages, and meeting individual’s needs hands on.
My final was with a Spanish colleague named Myra. Myra defined cultural as “The way of life, languages, race, and sex. She appeared very uncomfortable in answering the questions. Myra defined diversity as, “Differences in people, way of life, and race.
All of these aspects of cultural and diversity have been studied in the classroom. We have talked about people of different backgrounds, exploring their customs, holidays, traditions, and in exploring their differences; which could possible cause chaos in the lack of others understanding these differences. We have also discussed that these topics amongst diverse group are invisible in the minds of the control groups.
I believe that cultural differences are not respected as it should be. Most people are generally only concerned with their national origin and the background. This is a common practice even from the BC Era (Before Christ). Everything appears to be based on rank or position. Meaning that the lower you are on the pyramid scale, limits your chances for opportunity to advance further, reaching the goal of opportunities.
My thought is that the customs of other nationalities has been omitted and is completely invisible and unnoticed. A prime example is celebrating custom within the classroom, and in recognizing holidays, as we celebrate in America’s customs.
My thinking of other people’s culture and diversity has influence my thinking to talk more about these terms to other individuals. We really don’t talk enough on these topics. I believe that if these topics were discussed, we would have a better understanding in why we as a whole celebrate, and why it is important. I believe that communication is the key to building positive relationships, and in learning and exploring something new outside of our ways of life is a great start.

  73. Blog: Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions
    • Describe at least one example of a microaggression which you detected this week or remember from another time. In what context did the microaggression happen? What did you think and feel when you observed the microaggression or when you found yourself as the target of a microaggression?
This week I experience an unbelievable form of microaggression from one of my colleague. I was on my personal computer at my desk. I was on my lunch break. Usually I don’t take lunch; I eat healthy snacks throughout the day. A colleague came over to my desk and asked me what I was doing. I told her I was finishing a classroom assignment. Shortly afterward my supervisor came to my desk. She did not say anything to me, but I noticed she was looking at the screen of my computer. I told her that I was on my lunch break. This was an usual situation for me because my supervisor usually calls me on the telephone or yells across the room when she wants something. My colleague is very noisy and a very competitive person. She appears immature and wants all of my supervisor’s attention focused on her. I guess what I’m saying is that she is what I call a brown- nose person. Brown-nose is defined as —verb: 1. to be abjectly subservient (to); curry favour (with) —n: 2. an abjectly subservient person; sycophant [C20: from the notion that a subservient . I knew that she would to report what she saw to other colleagues or my supervisor. I expected that from her. Dr. Sue describes micro-aggression as a micro-insult, which is demeaning to one’s culture (Sue, 2011). I confronted her with my concern and she denied that she said anything to my supervisor. There is another terminology listed also, but it includes vague words. I would like to use that term, but I don’t want to offend anyone.

    • In what ways did your observation experiences this week affect your perception of the effects of discrimination, prejudice, and/or stereotypes on people.

I believe that I experienced a form of stereotype. There are perceptions that most black men are lazy and want to get something for nothing. I take my job very seriously. It is my duties to give 110% of myself to my employer. I am the only male in my unit and I am black. We only have Three (3) men in the department as a whole. I felt like I was intentionally targeted by my colleague, which could fall under the category of discrimination. In microinvalidation, one person tells his or her friend that he or she has experienced discrimination and the friend doesn’t believe that discrimination actually happened (Laureate Education, 2011).My thought is that the whole story was not told. My colleague saw me doing my work, and assumes that I was using the company’s time. My thought is that it was none of her business that I was on lunch and using my personal computer to complete my assignment.

  74. Richard,
Hmmm I was wondering what nationality your co worker was. While I was reading this I do agree that she most likely fits the description of a brown noser but I think she would have ratted out anyone doing their computer work regardless of race. People love to think that they are making themselves look better by getting someone else in trouble. She sounds more like a busybody to me than a racist but you would know that better than me. Take care.

  76. The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression
    • What memory do you have of an incident when you experienced bias, prejudice, and/or oppression, or witnessed someone else as the target of bias, prejudice, and/or oppression? Keep in mind that one can encounter such incidents in real contexts, including online environments, as well as in fictional ones, such as movies, books, television shows, and the like.
I would like to address a video I viewed this week. This was on a web-site given to the class by my instructor to view. I watched the video was in disarray of what I heard and seen. Little did I know that the video was staged with actors and actresses? The characters were a black man waiting for his white girlfriend to come to the barber shop. The black boyfriend was challenged by a hair dresser (Beautician) in having a white girlfriend, because of all the beautiful black girls available. The white girlfriend walked in and was challenged also. There were several customers in the shop who defended the white girlfriend’s position with her black boyfriend. There were a total of four different episodes viewed with a different person each time. These people refused to be apart or take negative reactions in support of the beautician. I was so elated with the outcome of the video that I posted it on my Facebook page. I believe that it is time for us to bury this type of behaviors. We live in a new world today and being the target of bias, prejudice, and/or oppression has no place in this world.
    • In what way(s) did the specific bias, prejudice and/or oppression in that incident diminish equity?
I believe that this prejudice diminished in that we all know that prejudice exists, and in one person stepping to the platform to stop this abhorrence is a stepping stone. All parties came to the conclusion that change is needed in order to end separateness out of existence.
    • What feelings did this incident bring up for you? I was very sad for the black boyfriend and his white girlfriend.
My son’s girlfriend is white and this could have very well have happened to him. I was elated with the conclusion of the Beautician and the white girlfriend hugging at the end of the video. I hope that this is a lesson well learned for our society.
    • What and/or who would have to change in order to turn this incident into an opportunity for greater equity? I believe that we all must change for greater equity.
We all are one with different races, genders, sex, and body makeup. We must learn that what affects one affects all of us in order to achieve greater equity.

  78. Blog: Welcoming Families From Around the World
The name of the country I decided to select is Japan. I know very about Japan.
    1. I would research Japan’s custom, family dynamics, family structures, religion, and the school systems in order to better prepare me in guiding these families in the right directions. The area I selected is social service agency’s worker.
    2. I would look for resources to help steelhead additional services need for my group.
    3. I would work closely with the group/ groups to ensure the services needed are being rendered and in a timely fashion (education, medical, dental, housing, financial assistance, language interpretation, etc.).
    4. I would make home visits to the homes to see how these families interacts with each other in their home environment and I will use whatever tools necessarily that I have gained in my studies to assist them.
    5. I would work hard on gaining the trust of the families and I will be their communication piece, until they are able to communicate on their own.
I do understand the people of diversity may have different needs, wants and desires; but the goal of these needs still remains the same. My motto is, “Culture for service and service for humanity” (Phi-Beta- Sigma Fraternity, 1914). My goal is to assist the families in any way necessary, including being their voice in assuring that they are accommodated with the necessities needed to move forward within their new lives here in America. I will also follow-up on the goals needed to elevate this family to another level, and be the eyes to help them make things happen positively within their life settings. I believe that these preparations will benefit both me and the family in becoming comfortable within the United States.

  79. Richard,
Two of your comments to me are the most important. First ensuring the family is offered services and resources in a timely manner and also building a foundation of trust so that the family becomes comfortable with the educational professionals. I have been witness several times to families that have needed services, qualified for the services but the length of time they had to wait was unacceptable. When someone is in need of a service it is usually a urgent matter.

  81. Tornado alley
For this assignment I was asked to watch a program with the sound off and the sound on. I was asked to answer the following questions below. I watched a program called Tornado Alley. The program was about tornadoes and how people handle themselves in a tornado. This appeared to be a reality show of live events in catastrophic situations.
    • What do you think the characters' relationships are based on the ways in which they are communicating?
The relationship appeared to be work related. This group of people was chasing tornados. They appeared to follow these tornados to capture the data of the storms.
    • What are they feeling and expressing based on the nonverbal behavior you are observing?
The facial expression was excited until the tornado nearly hit them. The ceiling dropped in the car from the force of the air. Everyone appeared to be in shock with fear in their face
    • Now, watch the show with the sound turned on.
The group stated that the tornado was bigger than predicted. This tornado took 30 minutes before ending. Usually the tornadoes ends in less time, according to the team.
    • What assumptions did you make about the characters and plot based on the ways in which you interpreted the communication you observed?
The character was very brave in the beginning. They appeared to be very close to each other. They were very concerned about the people. They transported people to the hospital in Joplin Missouri.
    • Would your assumptions have been more correct if you had been watching a show you know well?
No, my assumption would have been the same. I always take a blind eye in trying to predict the outcome of shows I watch. By taking that approach I can appreciate the program better.

This experience was a very rewarding experience for me. Verbal communication verses nonverbal communication can be devastating in understanding the whole picture. Nonverbal communication can create misunderstanding in validating true validity of what is seen. My thoughts are that hearing and seeing works together. If one is missing, usually you missed the whole story.

  82. Communication and Culture
When I think of culture, diversity, and education, the perception are all comparatively “deep-rooted” perceptions for me in my field as a program evaluator. Nevertheless, the comprehensive expression into each allocation has revealed in me a new dimension. I see myself repetitively aware of whom I am communication with. I do not view this presence because of people race, religion, gender, sexual preferences, or their political connection. I do understand that we have differences between our languages, roles as caretakers, rituals, morals, and values as human-beings. All of this goes without words.
I find that I tend to speak slower when there are language barriers and I find myself lowering the tone of my voice because I have a very deep voice, which may sound intimidating. Also I find that when it t comes to different cultures; I tend to be inquisitive in communicating with people of different cultures. This class has made me focus more on communication, communication purposes, and how effective communication can work in the best interest of all, if the communicated within the right channels. I have also learned that it is ok to disagree if the focus is placed on finding solutions to ratify the problems. My thought is that I want to treat everyone with the utmost of respect, regardless to their social status, race, gender, religion, or political views.
Approaches to communication can be more meritoriously if used correctly. I believe that communication skill s is not something innate within us. I believe that effective communication is a learned behavior. We must use the proper measurements in finding ways to become effective communicators. The first thing I believe to become an effective communicator is to learn to be a listener. I am an analytical person, I love to watch and observe others. Secondly, I would love to be the one to be the focus of attention in the setting, but my strongest skill is listening, and I used what I heard from other people to help mend their shortcomings. My thought is that every person can use some communication skills. Thirdly, I will continue to work in the areas of improvement to become a more effective communicator within my area of work. I truly believe that everyone wants to be competent in communicating and that we all want to improve in the areas of deficiencies.

  83. For my blog assignment this week, we were asked to think about the similarities and differences between how we evaluated ourselves as a communicator and how others evaluated me. What is the one thing that surprised me the most? Why? What other insights about communication did you gain this week, then choose at least two to share with others through your blog and consider how each might inform your professional work and personal life.
It appears that most of us were uncomfortable in evaluating the photo of the picture. My thought is that first impression can lead to misjudgments, understanding, and confusions. My first thought was wow, how can I do this in a tasteful perspective without stereotyping in a negative way.
As I read my colleagues’ questions and answers, and compared their answers to mines. I could see that most of us had some similarities and some differences. I could not really depict the exact position title of the photo by looking at the picture of the photo, but most of my colleagues defined a position/ job title of the person in the photo. My thought was that she worked in the field of hospitably, helping or working people. The smile on her face enabled me to see that she loves doing what she does. Her arms crossed appear that she is in control of herself, strong sense of confidence, and assurance. She appears to be very professional in her career path. Most of the class viewed this assignment as a challenge and did not want to appear as a stereotypical individual.
What surprised me that most of us had the same mindset in completing the assignment? Most of us appeared to be confused in our observation of the photo. The insight about communication is that I have learned that it is hard to judge someone based on a photo. We should take the time out to really engage in conversations to learn about others.
My thought is that this exercise can really helped in the development of my career today. I cannot assume that I know anyone without direct contact and having face to face contact with them. The telephone is a good source of contact, but face to face interaction is more meaningful.

  85. This week I have learned about non- violent communications and how it affects us as a society. We were asked to think about any disagreements, or conflicts, we have had recently experienced or are currently experiencing at work with a supervisor or colleague, or someone in your personal life. We were asked to share at least two strategies you have learned about that might help you manage or resolve the conflict more productively, and why these strategies might be effective.
I recently had a disagreement with my supervisor. We have had two program evaluators to leave and start new jobs. There were (7) seven program evaluators in the beginning. We had 15 cases each. We must make at least (7) seven visits annually to each home/center. Our caseload has increased from (15) fifteen to (33) thirty three cases per. program evaluator. We have (2) two mandatory office days in the office weekly. Therefore, we have (3) only days out of the week to make these visits. Also, we must go out on every complaint received by the department, open new family day homes/ daycares, manually complete licensing processed paper work/ commissioner’s letters, training for transportation services twice annually, conduct background checks on every employee, complete monthly reports, complete legal referrals, and other duties as assigned. We did not get a raise in pay this year. The supervisors stated that we will not be hiring anyone else soon. It has been (2) two years, since the last employee was hired. I explained that we need some additional manpower to help with the caseload to meeting consensuses. She stated that she was sorry; she knew we were overworked, and she was willing to step in and help at our request.
    Resolution:
    • The supervisors should look into getting someone hired to help with the workload.
    • Our services should reflect quality if we are working in the best interest of the children.
    • We need to get the commissioner involved in meeting the needs of the children.
    • Speak to the workforce development team on recruiting qualified employers.
    • Find way to help meet the demands of our environment.
My thought is that our concentration should be placed in ensuring that we have the man power to meet the necessities needed to keep our children safe. We need to focus on getting the deal makers involved in meeting our demands. We should work on increasing awareness of this situation, before it creates a hostile environment for our children. We need to work on the proper measurements in obtaining a goal that works for all.
In conclusion, we should use constructed criticism in finding reasonable resolutions in providing effective communication without conflicts. I do understand that conflict is part of our everyday life, and compromising is the best possible way to end or resolve conflict. My thought is that effective listening requires that one keep an open mind, not thinking in a selfish manner, and must be willing to listen as well as chose their words with caution.

  86. In this assignment we were asked to consider the adjourning phase for several of the groups in which I have been involved. Think about which aspects of the groups made for the hardest good-bye. We were asked are high-performing groups hardest to leave? Groups with the clearest established norms? Which of the groups that you participated in was hardest to leave? Why? What sorts of closing rituals have I experienced or wish you had experienced? How do I imagine that I will adjourn from the group of colleagues you have formed while working on your master's degree in this program, and why is adjourning an essential stage of teamwork?
Adjourning is defined as the stage of group development in which the members reflect on their accomplishments as failures as well as determine whether the group will dismantle or take on another project (O’Hair and Wireman, 2012). In considering the adjourning phrase for several of the groups I have been involved is somewhat difficult. I have never been involved in a group where everything was set in stone. As we all know when more than one person is involved, several changes may have to take place. In classroom s setting it is different from working with people that you see every day. I have not had the opportunity to work in group settings at Walden University yet. I am majoring in Early Childhood Advocacy and Public Policy, a division of early childhood studies.
All of my assignments have consistent in being individual work. If I may I would like to use a project that I worked on as a manager of a customer service call center. Several of my colleagues had a quality assurance problem in getting their staff to meet productivity. Productive is the measurement of the (ACT) average call time, (AHT) average handle time, (quality) grammar/spelling, and these three (3) areas were major concerns of the call-center. Several employees lost their jobs, due to low job performances based on this scale. Not everyone agreed on the best measures in getting to the goal. I suggested that the customer service representative will work best in cross training with a peer exceeding our goals. Someone else stated that we did not have time to place non-performance representatives with performing representatives. My thought was that the bottom line was that they were going to be off the phones anyway. We ended up terminating the employees without any training.
This was really hard for to shallow. The company wasted millions of dollars in bringing in new-hires every three (3) months, and this was a revolving door of dollars spent for training, wasted. Yes, I believe that high performance groups are hard to leave. I believe that it takes a lot of planning, meetings, changes, time, and implementation in developing high performers. My thought is that high performance is not a naturally traits learned. High performance is achieved when work and time is placed as the center focus of attention .My thought is that in order to become a high achiever, one must be willing to take risks in learning everything possible to get to the next level.
The group that has the clearest set of norms to me is "Performing Stage". This norm is a mutual agreement to work together at establishing rules to follow and govern by the parties involved. This norm gives the individual an opportunity to work together in consensus with each other. All members will be involved in planning the different types of events needed to exceed in expectations. Everyone will have an opportunity in working toward the group's goal, and in overcoming any steeplechases we may have met. I believe that people are more quickly to buy in when a plan is made without cruelty.
Although I know that we must go on in our life, I have really enjoyed this class; this class has really helped me in developing hidden aspects that has manifested greatly in learning more about who I am as a person.me. I have also learned so much through my classmate and my instructor. It has really been privileged working with all of you.

  87. Farewell
This has been an exciting (8) eight weeks for me. It has been a pleasure working with all of you. I am learned so much from my weekly communication and from reading your blogs. As a team, I believe that we all have learned so much about effective communications, non-verbal communication, developing judgments based on perceptions, observing videos- pods from the media on the black- board assignments. I am also had the opportunity to learn something new about myself as well. We have learned about the negative and positive effects in developing effective communications, and I believe that as a team we will all be an asset to our communities. I appreciate your input in helping me to achieve the leadership abilities needed to become a strong leader in the early childhood education field. As we move on in lite, it is my expectation to hear and read wonderful thing about your success in the near future. I will be honored and proud to know that I have had the opportunity to work with such a wonderful group of people. Thanks Dr. Hampshire for taking time to work with me. 89. Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels
The three organization s that appeals to me is The National Coalitions for the Homeless, MIFA, and The Mid-South Food Bank of Memphis. The Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that works in helping homeless people in finding job placements and temporary housing. The National Coalitions for the Homeless is a national network of people who are currently experiencing or who have experienced homelessness, activists and advocates. The program networks closely with employment and home associations, partnering to improve the life of the homeless people.
MIFA works with helping abused mothers finding housing placements, and in gaining their independence in bringing families together in reaching self- sufficiency. MIFA place these families in secluded placement of security. The place of location is unknown to outsiders and confidentiality is their main focus of placements. Women are housed through the agency, placed in temporary placement, monitored through the program, and placed in a secure area for the safety of the women in attendance. MIFA also delivers food on wheels to the elderly population daily (lunch and dinner). According to the National Coalition of the Homeless, from 2012 to 2014, overall homelessness in Memphis-Shelby County, Tennessee decreased by 21 percent and chronic homelessness among individuals decreased by 39 percent, and, the number of homeless families decreased by 30 percent, from 214 families in 2012 to 149 families in 2014 (National Alliance to End Homelessness,2014) .MIFA also help assist families in emergency assistance, paying the light, gas, and water bills, rental assistance, and housing placements.
The Mid-South Food Bank of Memphis operates out of Memphis, Tennessee, works through private donations, and food content donated through the public’s sectors. Many companies help in partnering through collecting can goods and non-perishable products, and donating these products to the Mid - South Food Bank of Memphis. The food is given to families in need of food, to alleviate hunger within the communities. Every summer regional Food Banks across the country experience significant decrease in food donations (The Mid-South Food Bank of Memphis, 2014).

  90. Week 4 Blog assignment: Part 1
Three national/federal organizations or communities of practice that appeal to me and why I chose them.
    1. Head-Start is my first choice. Head-Start is a federal government organization. Head-Start appeals to me because of the thing that that they do for children and their families. Head-Start origin is rich and nourishing in developing preschoolers into productive little individuals. Head-Start also offers certified training to their teachers and administrative staff through (National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). I am employed as a program evaluator for the State of Tennessee and have had a positive experience in working with Head-Start program in Memphis, Tennessee during my tentative from 2002 to the present. Head-Start was initiated during the presidential terms of Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson and John F. Kennedy. Both presidents kept their words to the black community that they committed in helping their children reach their full potentials through promoting education of children during the early years. The program was at the peak and originated after JFK was assassinated and replaced by Lyndon B. Johnson. The Head-Start program started during the 1960’s. According to their official web site, Office of Head-Start (2014) “Head-Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children ages birth to 5 from low income families”. (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs). Also, Head-Start partner with families providing assessments, daily reports, job opportunities, home visits, monitoring through state government agencies, and leading them to other community helps if needed. Partnering with the parents as a head teacher was a positive experience for me. http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=Head+Start&l=Tennessee&matchtype=b&network=s&device=c&devicemodel=&creative=60424373369&keyword=_inurl:www.indeed.com/q-

Job opportunities – I logged into Head – Start job opportunity. A list of employment organizations such as Indeed and several other job placement organizations appeared. You have the options to placing the state you are searching for employment in. I selected Memphis Tennessee.t Home that would be part of the state of Florida where I live. There were two jobs that were of interest to me that were posted.
    • Infant Toddler Teacher – Skills and experience needed included first, a BA in early childhood studies, and second, experience working with early childhood children preferably.
    • Early Childhood Education Coordinator – Qualifications and skills, and experience needed included first, a MA in early childhood studies, and second, experience working for Head-Start or another organization like Head-Start.

    1. Before reading your post, I had a negative attitude about Head Start due to what I have been told by coworkers. However, after reading your post, I have a better understanding about Head Start and more positive outlook on Head Start. I really enjoyed reading that if you were interested in being employed by Head Start you had the option to choose which state you were interested in. I feel that the schooling is also reasonable. I think being a Coordinator would be a great job to have, however the experience working for Head Start or another Organization would deter me from applying since I do not have experience working for an organization.

Overall, Great Post. Thanks for changing my view on Head Start.

UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers, and the variety of partners at proletarian level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. I believe that what makes UNICEF unique among world organizations, and among those working with the young. UNICEF has the same goals as I have. I believe that nurturing and caring for children are the foundations of human progress. UNICEF was also created with this purpose in mind – to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. This is very important that we can all, together, advance the cause of humanity. There are no preset job opportunities that interest me. 98. I have learned so much during my tenure here at Walden University. During these past (18) eighteen months, I have gained wealth of knowledge about diversity, cause and effects of systematic issues and trends within the world, social identities within myself, colleagues, and from others outside of the classroom. I believe that I have a solid the foundation to move forward in improving my professional growth. I have gained information from my colleagues on their chosen capstone, and shared my opinions on enhancing and expanding their chosen capstones. The most important mechanism that I have learned is that communication should be the main focus point in delivering effectiveness communication through connections, and that a Community of Practice is relevant along with a specific agenda and topic in place.
Networking with my colleagues, instructor, and in collaborating together as one unit has pieced together lasting memories I will never forget. I have also learned that there will always be changes within the world, and that change can be good for all of us. This world is a revolving door, and there are plenty of rooms for us to explore self-first, and then venture into understanding others. This has been a very rewarding adventure for me in exploring and expressing myself in a new light; outside the light I was familiar seeing. Now, I see the world in a totally different perspective, and I am ready to welcome any challenges ahead of me.
My long-term goal is to continue working with children. I have plans to continue my education in finding solutions to the issues and trends here in America, and then expanding outside of America in helping other countries with their issues and trends they are facing or challenging. My focus is on homeless children within the school systems. Class, I will miss all of you, and thanks Dr. Dartt for all of your support from my start at Walden to my finishing line.
